 China Bank Card Workshop (Shanghai) [16 May 2008]

In 2008, the Asia Pacific Smart Card Association will organise one “Profit from Cards” workshop for bankers in Shanghai, 15-16 May, 2008. The workshop is designed for senior managers involved in strategy development for retail banking, and in product development or marketing for payment products and businesses such as cards, e-banking and ATMs.
Chip cards (IC cards) offer new business models as well as technological change. This workshop will explore the ways that banks can use chip cards (including contactless cards) to develop new and profitable businesses, while at the same time enhancing the proposition they offer to their existing customers and increasing the revenue from their card issuing business. Aspects considered will include:
· Comparing ATM, debit, credit and prepaid card business models;
· Customer differentiation and identification of profitable segments;
· Cost of fraud and security;
· Increasing cardholder penetration without increasing risk through the use of improved credit scoring and risk management tools;
· Increasing transaction volume by penetrating new sectors and encouraging customers to move from ATM cash withdrawal to point of sale debit card use;
· Increasing the bank’s share of the cardholder’s total expenditure by supporting micropayments and cash substitution;
· Increasing the bank’s understanding of its customers and improving customer relationship management through the analysis of transaction patterns (using both host-based and card-based systems).
· Increasing the use of bank payment products for bill payments and other transaction types;
· What additional applications on a payment card actually bring extra revenue or benefits to the bank?
· Addressing competition from non-banks in payment transaction processing.
